Chandigarh – The Only Indian City Where Roads Are Not Named After Political Leaders

There’s no doubt in the fact that Chandigarh is the most beautiful city of India. Another fact about Chandigarh is that – while other Indian cities are full of roads and streets named after political leaders, the city beautiful enjoys calling its roads as Jan Marg, Madhya Marg, Sukhna Marg etc. Of course, it makes Chandigarh free from any political influence – at least when it comes to naming city areas or roads.

If we talk about any other city in India, you might go through Netaji Subash Chander Bose Chownk through Buddha road to Gandhi Marg and then to Nehru Chownk. I mean just think of cities you have traveled and you’ll be easily able to recall the names of such areas that you have heard or visited.

After the Indian independence, it had become a tradition to name streets, chownk or other areas in a city after freedom fighters which soon changed to the names of political leaders of BJP, Congress and other ruling parties. However, one city which has been able to keep itself out of all this is Chandigarh. If you are a resident of Chandigarh, I am sure you might be thinking of various places in the city – trying to find out if anything has been named after a political leader. Well, here’s a list of few places to give you an idea about how different areas have been named in Chandigarh.

Roads in Chandigarh are named as:

  • Madhya Marg

  • Udyan Path
  • Dakshin Marg
  • Uttar Marg
  • Udyog Path

I guess by now, you might be having one or two places in your mind that have been named after political leaders. I agree that a couple of places have broken the record, but on a whole Chandigarh is the only city in India that has least areas named after the names of political leaders. While we are on the subject of finding such places in Chandigarh, so here’s a list of some exceptions.

Few Exceptions:

  1. Rajiv Gandhi IT Park.
  2. CDCL Building in Sector 28 (Named after Chaudhary Devi Lal).
  3. Nehru Hospital at PGI.

We could only find these 3 names. But if we had to come back to the topic of names of roads, streets or chownks, then there’s not even a single road in Chandigarh that is named after a political leader.

Apart from this, Chandigarh is the cleanest, greenest and happiest city of India.
