We have heard a lot of news stories and rumours about the upcoming International Airport at Chandigarh / Mohali. Some call it Chandigarh International Airport while other refer it as Mohali International Airport. There has been a lot of confusion among people about the truth and they often ask: is Mohali International Airport and Chandigarh International Airport the same or 2 different airports are being constructed? Well, here’s all that you should know about the (unnamed) International Airport Chandigarh at Mohali.
Truth behind the Airport Deal between Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana:
There has always been a fight between Punjab and Haryana over Chandigarh and this time again the fight is going on to claim the upcoming International Airport. While Chandigarh already has a airport which is being run and managed by the Air Force, a new International Airport Terminal was thus suggested near the existing airport with new terminal building and runway.
Land was purchased near the existing terminal (which falls near Jheourheri village) in district Mohali. The construction work on the new International Airport has almost been completed and final touches are being given as of summers of 2015. But still there is no name for the airport.
The details of the land purchase deal between Punjab, Haryana & central government is as under:
Punjab: 24.5% Share.
Haryana: 24.5% Share.
Airport Authority of India: 51% Share
Why there’s no name for Chandigarh/Mohali International Airport?
Punjab wants to name the airport as ‘Mohali International Airport’ but Haryana objects to this name saying that it has equal share in the airport. So, Haryana suggested that the airport be named as Chandigarh International Airport. But Punjab CM, Mr. Prakash Singh Badal wants to add Mohali to the name. So he recommended using “International Airport Chandigarh at Mohali”. When this was also rejected, a new name came up which was “Shaheed Bhagat Singh Airport, Mohali.” Haryana is okay with the name of freedom martyr but wants to omit Mohali.
Even as the airport is on the edge of completion, no final decision has been taken on naming the Chandigarh International Airport. Airport authority of India will be taking a final decision but nothing has been said upon this yet.
Location of Chandigarh International Airport in Mohali:
It is said that the existing Chandigarh Airport will be linked with the new International Airport. The location of this new airport is near the newly developed Aerocity. This map will give you a good idea:
