Chandigarhians throng Shimla on New Year Eve 2017

Shimla has always been a favourite tourist spot for residents of Chandigarh as it is the nearest hill station. People often go to Shimla to see the snowfall during winters at the time of Christmas and New Year. Although Shimla did not had a snowfall during this week but it could not stop tourists from Chandigarh to visit Shimla on New Year 2017.

Toy train and buses full | Traffic jams on Chandigarh – Shimla highway

The reservations in the toy train which runs from Kalka to Shimla was completely full almost a month before the New year eve. All buses (Volvo as well as normal ones) were plying with all seats full from Chandigarh to Shimla. Apart from the public transport, there were traffic jams on the Chandigarh Shimla highway due to huge rush of cars at many points. Traffic was moving at a very slow pace in Shimla and on the Shimla – Kufri road.

All hotels in Shimla fully packed

It is not just Chandigarhians who visit Shimla on New Year eve. People from Delhi also come to Shimla in large numbers to celebrate the 1st day of the year. According to the reports all hotels were packed to their maximum capacity during Christmas 2016 and New Year 2017. Winter vacations in schools and colleges of Chandigarh is also a reason which leads to the rush at Shimla on New Year eve. No rooms were available in any 5 star, 3 or 4 star hotels as well as the desi hotels in Shimla. Hotels were charging double the rent for a room as it is the peak season for them.

New Year celebrations at Mall Road Shimla

People gathered on the Mall Road to ring in the New year in Shimla at midnight. Police personal were deployed to keep the situation in control. Groups of youngsters and families could be seen all over. Restaurants and snack shops were open till 2:00 AM on new year eve. Special fireworks at midnight marked the commencement of New Year at the ridge.

It was not just midnight when the Mall road was full of tourists. People started to gather on the Mall road at around 11:00 AM on 1st Jan and by afternoon there was a huge rush of people all around. You can well imagine the rush of tourists from the above picture.
