After a big no for the Chandigarh Metro Rail Project, a new Project of Tricity Suburban Rail project has been proposed to reduce the traffic chaos in the city. Last month, Chandigarh Metro Rail Project was denied by the Committee considering it as not commercially viable for the city. And now the new model of transportation has been proposed for Chandigarh that is a Suburban Rail.
The alternate transportation is expected to be beneficial for those who commute within the Tricity from the nearby cities. And the concept of Suburban Rail Project for Chandigarh has been based on Mumbai’s local train network (Lifeline of Mumbai). Also, it has been expected to be functional after 2 months of its approval.
Suburban Rail Project for Chandigarh
The Tricity Suburban Rail Project has been proposed by Punjab Traffic Adviser Navdeep Asija to decongest the traffic over the roads. Almost a proposal worth Rs. 1000 crores have been submitted for the approval of Punjab Chief Secretary & Addition Chief Secretary. Whereas the budget of Chandigarh Metro Rail Project was around Rs. 14,000 crores.
The Suburban Rail Project need 9 new stations in the areas like- Chandigarh Airport, Mansa Devi- IT Park, Near Elante Mall, Landran, Landran-Banur, Mohali & Education hub Sector 34. Out of the 108 Km proposed route, 65 Km has been already operational. Only land acquisition for 20 km route between Chandigarh-Baddi has been proposed by the Northern Railway and another 23km construction is needed between Kurali & Baddi link.

As per the Traffic adviser the alternative transportation, the Suburban Rail will surely decrease the traffic chaos within the city beautiful Chandigarh as well as make it safer for the people who travel from adjoining areas to the city. Even it will help the movement of goods & labor from the city to Baddi area, where there have been almost 400 operational industries. Suburban rail in Chandigarh will be beneficial for the student as well, who travel from Chandigarh to Landran & Jhanjheri for their education in colleges like – CU, Rayat-Bahra University, CGC & many more.
