After Hanging in For Years, Chandigarh Metro Rail Project Finally Scrapped Off & Here’s Why

Chandigarh’s dream of Metro has been withheld by the committee of Home Minister Advisory. The city beautiful will have to wait for some more years to travel in the metro in the city. India’s Home Minister Advisory Committee denied taking further the metro rail project in Chandigarh. The meeting includes Mayor VP Bandnore, Punjab Governor, Sanjay Tondon and Kiron Kher.

Although the metro rail project for Chandigarh was a much-awaited one by the residents now they have to wait for some more years to have metro in the city. After 11 years of the long survey, Home Minister put a full stop on improving the mode of transportation by launching Metro rail project in Chandigarh.

The status of Chandigarh Metro Project Till Now

The study & survey for the Chandigarh metro rail started in the year 2006. And Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) submitted the detailed report of the project by 2012. As per the initial report of DMRC for the Chandigarh Metro Rail, it has been expected that the cost of the project will be around Rs. 10,900 crores including the taxes & cost of the land. A MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) regarding the 37 km metro track including 7.8 km for Punjab and 6.41 km for Panchkula was signed between Punjab, Haryana  UT Administration.

After spending almost Rs. 1.5 crore for the preparation of Chandigarh Metro Project report then also Ministry of Urban Development questioned on the project’s viability & denied giving approval to the dream project of all Chandigarhians.

Reason Why Metro Project in Chandigarh has been withheld

The most important reason of beholding the Chandigarh’s metro rail project seems to be its viability. As of now, Home Minister’s Advisory Committee has denied giving approval to the Metro rail for Chandigarh by saying that it is not commercially viable for the city. Whereas one side Kiron Kher supported the statement of the committee and emphasizes on to improve other modes of transportation in the city. But on other side, Sanjay Tondon disagreed the committee’s decision & said that decision should be taken by keeping in mind of the traffic congestion in Chandigarh after 20 years.

Although the decision of the committee saying no to Chandigarh metro rail project has surely hurt the residents. Let’s hope to soon have metro rail in Chandigarh near future.
