Air India to Serve Only Vegetarian Food on Board | Here’s The Reason Why

Air India has stopped serving on vegetarian meals to economy class passengers. why? Airline Charmain had reasoned this controversial move, he says that it will cut wastage as single meal type will b offered and the number of food trays being loaded on an aircraft would reduce. Not only this, Aircraft would have reduced catering cost and will avoid mixing up of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. Though his reasoning is not supported in Parliament.

Air India Vegetarian Meals

An airline serves hundred of meals daily and has found only single complaint each year of mixing of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal from 2014-2016.  Air India has hundreds of daily flights with hundred of meals servings each day. But till now a single-complaint is being registered every year about mixing of the vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal. The government said that no directives have been given to Air India for excluding non-vegetarian meal.

Air India said that the step was taken after feedback from fliers. Though the government has not disclosed any flier survey result on how many agreed with the decision of cut on the non-vegetarian meal. The Hindu alerted the fliers of Air India about the missing chicken soup on flights.

Economy Class: No Non-Vegetarian Meal

From Mid June Air India has stopped serving Economy class passengers with non-vegetarian meals on all domestic flights. Only vegetarian meals in economy class will be served during domestic flights. Though passengers of Business class and Executive class will continue to enjoy non-vegetarian meals. Air India flight took such decision to reduce cut wastage of meals, the cost of catering and avoiding mixing of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals.

Air India claim of wiping out non-vegetarian meal would cut wastage is not justified. As airlines don’t maintain any record of food wasted on account of non-consumption by passengers. If Air India doesn’t have any record, they can not display this as a reason to the eliminate non-vegetarian meal. In general, 30% of food loaded on a flight is wasted due to non-consumption by passengers.  By eliminating non-vegetarian food Air India will save 8-10 crore annually.

In general, 30% of food loaded on a flight is wasted due to non-consumption by passengers. By eliminating non-vegetarian food Air India will save 8-10 crore annually. But Airline incurs a huge amount of other costs in cancellation and flight delay. In 2016 Rs 10 crore was paid by the airline for the flight delay. Moreover, Air India has huge complaints about flight delays and cancellation. So the decision of eliminating non-vegetarian meal doesn’t seem to be justified.
