As per the changes, a PhD degree will be necessary to be possessed for the teachers of the University level. This shall also be applicable for the post of the assistant professors which is the designation of instructors at the entry level in the universities.
As of now, the minimum eligibility criteria for the post of an assistant professor was that he/she should have cleared the UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) as well as have a Masters Degree. The teachers will also have to devote two hours time in order to mentor the students in context to the development as well as the extra-curricular activities. Along with the PhD, the students will have to appear for the NET or the state level eligibility test. Whereas, all the ones who have obtained their PhD before 2009 need not appear for the National Eligibility Test. Along with these, the other features included in the regulations include the introduction of a teacher evaluation grading system which is simplified in nature, doing away with the API based appraisal as well as the addition of the research score in order to improve the level of the research output.
PhD will now be considered mandatory in order to promote the level of the associate as well as the assistant professors of the selection grades in various colleges and universities. All the candidates who have attained their PhD degree from the institutions which have a place in the top 500 ranking amongst the World University Ranking (at any time) by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Times Higher Education (THE) or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai) need not necessarily appear for the NET.
