Bird Flu in Chandigarh: Sukhna Lake area restricted for general public

Chandigarh Administration has suspended all activities at Sukhna Lake with immediate effect till a further notice, citing the bird flu scare in Chandigarh. The announcement came soon after a dead duck at Sukhna Lake Chandigarh was tested positive for H5N1 virus (Bird Flu) at an advanced bird disease laboratory in Bhopal.

Yesterday afternoon, Police personal were deployed at Sukhna Lake Chandigarh and were given instructions to stop people from going down the stairs. Soon after a meeting was held by the top officials of Chandigarh Administration on this issue and the government took the decision to make Sukhna lake a No-Go zone till further notice.

This decision came as a measure to control the infection. Ducks at Sukhna Lake not only used to come on the stairs but also on the walking path. All the ducks have been confined to a fenced area and the Chandigarh wild life department people are providing feed to them in that area itself.

All activities at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh have been suspended. These include boating, jogging, sight-seeing, bird-watching, leisure activities etc. The CITCO restaurant as well as other shops at Sukhna Lake have also been told to close down till a further notice.

However, the Chandigarh administration has asked people not to panic. Teams of experts from other parts of India have arrived at Sukhna Lake to analyse and curb the infection. No decision has been taken to cull the birds yet. But according to WHO, all birds within 1 KM radius of the infected area have to be culled.

Tourists coming to Chandigarh are facing a hard time as they are not being allowed to enter the Lake premises. If the situation gets worse, then Rock garden also might have to be shut down for few days till the infection is totally in control. We’ll keep you posted on the latest happening.
