Punjab Gets a New Chief Minister | Captain Amarinder Singh Takes Oath in Chandigarh

Punjab has a Congress government after 10 years. This morning, Captain Amarinder Singh took an oath as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab. Navjot Singh Sidhu, who quit BJP was third on the list of ministers. However, BJP is in power in the other four states which include Uttar Pradesh but it is the Congress Government which got elected in Punjab with ease.

Amarinder Singh – New Chief Minister of Punjab

This is the second time that Captain Amarinder Singh has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab. He took an oath at Punjab Raj Bhawan in Sector 6 of Chandigarh.

The oath ceremony was held at 10:00 AM as this was an auspicious time.

Highlights of The Ceremony  

Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu paid respect by touching Captain Amarinder Singh’s feet on the stage. Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu suggested that he expects handsome compensation for his role.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the CM by tweeting, ” Congratulations on taking oath as CM. Wishing you the very best in working for Punjab’s development.

Vice President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also attended the ceremony.

As per the list of ministers given to the Punjab Governor for the oath ceremony, Brahm Mohindra, party’s senior-most legislator was in the first place, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu on the second place.

Four-time lawmaker Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Four-time lawmaker and Rana Gurjit Singh, the state’s richest legislator will also be ministers. Charanjit Singh Channi, leader of the Congress legislature party and Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Nabha legislators also took an oath at the ceremony.

Captain Amarinder Singh’s cabinet team also includes Manpreet Singh Badal who was the finance minister in the Badal Government of the Akali Dal.

Navjot Singh Sidhu said that he will sacrifice himself for Punjab. He also said that he wants to see Punjab prosper.

The Congress government made sure that the ceremony is a low-key affair. The Punjab government has been in a severe debt. The debt exceeds Rs. 1.25 lakh crore averaging Rs. 37,000 for every resident in the state.

Captain Amarinder Singh said that he does not want to celebrate the win when the people of Punjab are suffering due to severe financial problems.

Congress won the most number seats winning 77 seats out of Punjab’s 117 seats, Aam Aadmi Party winning 20 seats and Akali Dal- BJP combine won 15 seats.
