In Chandigarh, 40,000 People Including Graduates Applied for 532 Sweeper Posts

Chandigarh is lacking behind when it comes to job opportunities. There are very fewer job opportunities in Chandigarh irrespective of the job designation as compared to metropolitan cities. About 40,000 applicants came forward for the post of sweepers. The total sweeper posts in Chandigarh are 532. The most shocking thing is that 20% of all these applicants are graduates.

Minimum Qualification For Sweeper Post

A senior official of MOH ( Medical Officer of Health) said that the minimum qualification set for the job post was middle school pass but a lot of graduates have also applied for the post of a sweeper. The last day of submitting the application for the job post was 11th April 2017. The division of job post according to the category:

  1. General Category – 207
  2. SC – 96
  3. OBC -144
  4. Disabled – 16
  5. Ex-servicemen – 69

Applicants Will Have To Undergo Several Tests

The applicants will have to undergo two test for the post of a safai karmachari with the MC.The applicants will undergo a 35 minutes “preparation of broom” test. If the candidates are successful in clearing the test, he will undergo a ten minutes “sweeping” test in which his skills would be judged.The civic body said that the broom should come apart while sweeping.

If a lot of candidates qualify in the skill test then the selection will be done through draw of lots. Every category will have a separate draw of lots.

The applicants will finally be selected on the basis of their educational qualification, valid reserved category certificate, medical fitness, verification of character and antecedents. The present scenario is:

  1. 1,100 regular employees and 1,134 contractual employees are working under the MC as safai karmacharis.
  2. These job posts for sweeper were lying vacant since many years. It was decided to recruit more sweepers as some councilors complained that their wards had very fewer sweepers.

The cleanliness of city was the most discussed topic in the past three meetings of the general house. A lot of questions have also been raised on the cleanliness of Chandigarh. The BJP councilors said that the cleanliness of the city was a flop show. They said that a lot of areas in the city were dirty and manpower is needed to clean the city.
