Chandigarh Airport which is gearing up to start international flights will soon have a special international terminal along side the existing domestic terminal. The international terminal building at Chandigarh Airport is currently under construction but the work is going on at full swing.
The entry to the international terminal might be different and passengers who want to board domestic flights might not be allowed inside the international terminal. It seems that Chandigarh Airport is being built like the New Delhi airport which has different terminals – T1 (for domestic flights) and T3 (for international flights).
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) along with Punjab and Haryana governments have already spent Rs. 1100 crore for the up-gradation of Chandigarh Airport to start international flights. According to the plan, Chandigarh will be the next big destination in North India for International flights and it will boost trade and business in Chandigarh, Punjab as well as Haryana.
The domestic terminal of Chandigarh Airport is operational but no international flights currently take off or land over here. The runway at Chandigarh Airport needs to be upgraded to make it broad so that big air planes can land and take off from the runway. Also the IAF is planning to install new technology so that the runway can be operational 24 hour (even at night). Right now, no plane can land or take off from Chandigarh Airport.
