Chandigarh to Have a Car Free Day Every Month | 28th Feb 2016 Would be the First

Chandigarh is all set to observe a car free day every month in order to control the traffic and air pollution levels in city. Ruling out Delhi’s odd-even formula, Chandigarh administration has decided to restrict the number of private vehicles on Chandigarh roads once a month by observing a car free day.

First Car Free Day in Chandigarh

The first car free day in Chandigarh would be held on 28th February, 2016. The details are as follow:

  • No private vehicle would be allowed on city roads.
  • Date: 28th February, 2016.
  • Day: Sunday.
  • Timings: 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. (Total 8 hours).

Although the date and timings have been finalized, but the Chandigarh Administration has not disclosed the details of the first car free day. Daily a large number of vehicles enter Chandigarh from neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryan and Himachal Pradesh. It is not clear that will these cars to allowed to enter Chandigarh or not.

However, no private cars would be allowed to run on city roads from 7:00 Am to 2:00 PM on 28th Feb, 2016. If you are looking forward to go out of town on 28th, you are advised to move out before 7:00 AM. If you get late, then you’ll have to move out after 2:00 PM.

Chandigarh Police is gearing up for the first car free day in Chandigarh. Administration will also take help of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) as it would require more bus service within the specified time. Outstation Buses moving in and out of Chandigarh would also not be affected due to car free day.

It was also revealed that this car free day would be made a monthly practise. Currently, Chandigarh administration is thinking to observe the last Sunday of every month as a car free day for limited number of hours. A feedback would be asked from residents after the 1st car free day and the public majority would be taken into consideration before announcing car free days or car free hours in Chandigarh.
