Chandigarh Gets its First Open Air Gym & its Free for All

Chandigarh, the city of gardens has got an open gym at one of its prime garden. Going on the lines of Mumbai and Delhi, Chandigarh Administration has created an open air public gym in Sector 16 for people to indulge in exercises. Brand new gym equipment has been purchased and installed at a garden for Chandigarh residents.

The much talked about open air gym has come up at a strategic location which would benefit thousands of youngsters as well as elderly people in Chandigarh.

Location: Shanti Kunj, Sector 16.

Timings: Early morning till late night.

Membership Fee: Free for all.

Equipment: 10 brand new gym exercising machines.

A cemented stage which was not being used at Shanti Kunj has been utilized to set up the open air gym. The stage was earlier used for cultural programmes. After High Court’s order for banning sound at Shanti Kunj due to close by residential area, the plan for open gym came up.

Such kind of open gyms would soon be introduced at other major parks / gardens in Chandigarh. People will be able to do exercises  while they go for their morning or evening walk. The aim for the project id to promote healthy living in the city.

This open air gym at Shanti Kunj in Sector 16 has been developed at a budget of Rs. 10 Lakh. The initiative of this public gym has been taken by councillor Pardeep Chhabra who has spent money from his councillor ward development fund.

The exercising machines which have been installed at Shanti Kunj to make Chandigarh’s first open air gym include treadmill, legs shaper, abs shaper, shoulder press and more. All machines are manual and hence no electricity will be used to operate these machines.

Chandigarh civic body is also thinking of getting a personal trainer at the location who would assist people while exercises during morning and evening hours. A lot of people are expected to make use of this open air gym at Chandigarh as exercising in open air in the garden will surely be better than exercising in air-conditioned gyms of the city.
