Chandigarh Govt Plans 75% Quota for City Students in 11th Class

The education department is also working to make the entire system of the department online

Chandigarh: The education department of UT is in process of introducing a quota of 75% to 80% in the admission in Class 11th for Chandigarh residents students in government schools. The education department is also working to make the entire system of the department online. The district education officer has already sent this proposal to the director of the school education.

Many City Based Students Left Without Admissions Last Year

This move of introducing 75% to 80% quota for Chandigarh students comes after the last year admissions. Thousands of city-based students left without admission last year. These students left without admission in the government school even after the 7th round of counselling for Class XI in 2017-18. The education department had to conduct one more round of counselling for admissions and also raised the seats to accommodate students. This disturbs the teacher students ratio.

To decide the exact percentage under the quota to be given for all Chandigarh based students, Anujit Kaur, the district education officer has asked all the government schools for the total strength of the students in class 11th. Forty government schools (model and non-model senior secondary schools) had said that out of all students, 21% of the students were from outside Chandigarh.

The UT education department is also planning to change the system for admission of the students. Currently, for admission, a centralised online system is used and this system showed discrepancies in the admission session 2017. District Education officer Anujit Kaur also said that the proposal for the quota and making the entire system online has been sent to director school education.

The change in the system will make the system error-free and will save the manpower. As of now, students will have to fill the form and then the details are uploaded online. This change will save the time and lower the need for multiple counselling sessions.

Impact of Quota

Well, if this is approved then this will prove negative for students who are from Mohali and Panchkula. Daily many students come from Panchkula and Mohali. This quota will lower the chances of the students of Mohali and Panchkula to get admission in the Chandigarh government schools. But this move will increase the chances of schools in Mohali and Panchkula to get more admissions of students in class 11th this session.
