Chandigarh International Airport has been under construction for quite some time. In light of recent news updates, it has come to surface that the Chandigarh International Airport will remain closed for two weeks in the upcoming month of February. No flights will be operated to and fro Chandigarh Airport within the time frame of 12th February to 26th February 2018. This notice was issued by the authorities on Saturday.
Chandigarh International Airport to Shut in Feb 2018
As per the latest notification issued by Airport authorities, the Chandigarh Airport will not entertain any flight between 12th Feb to 26th Feb 2018. All the airlines have been informed regarding the news of the closure of Airport for 2 weeks. As all of us are familiar with the fact that Airport is upgrading the runway. This decision of closing the Chandigarh airport for two weeks is to speed up the work to increase the length of the runway and install the new technology while doing so.
For now, the Chandigarh Airport is connecting Dubai, Sharjah, along with 27 domestic flights connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jammu, Jaipur, Leh, and Hyderabad. Also, the new flight connecting Chandigarh directly with Bangkok is going to commence soon on 11th December 2017.
At present, the length of the runway in Chandigarh Airport is 9,000 feet and the work of increasing the length up to 10,200 feet is going on. This will enable the wide-bodied aircrafts to operate from Chandigarh. Once, the upgrading is complete Chandigarh will be able to operate long-distance flights connecting Europe, US, as well as Australia. The estimated time of completing the construction at Chandigarh Airport is by the end of next year.
This closure of Chandigarh International Airport for two weeks in February will definitely hinder the traveler’s plans and therefore the announcement is made two months before. With this announcement, authorities have assured to avoid the chaos among travellers while providing them enough time to reschedule their plans. After the construction work of improving the runway is complete Chandigarh will be connected to Countries like Europe, Australia as well as the US. Let us hope the work is completed within the estimated time period.
