Chandigarh Sets a New Record | This Time with Women School Teachers

News, that the beautiful City, Chandigarh has the second highest proportion of the Women school teachers in India will definitely cheer all the Chandigarh lovers. With great pride, it is an honor to tell that on average 80% of teachers in Chandigarh from classes I to VIII are women. The notion of gender equality has set to another level by this commendable state. Where the percentage of female teachers decreased in Chandigarh from 81% in 2014-15 to 78.90% in 2015-16 there, Goa’s percentage improved from 79.25% in years 2014-15 to 79.92% in the following years.

The average in India

According to the recent survey conducted by the Union human resource development (HRD), on the national level, the average of working women as school teachers for classes I to VIII is 47%.

According to the famous statistician, Dr. Gaurav Pandey, in Goa the colleges offering DEd and BEd are considered female oriented colleges and not only this but, in states like Uttar Pradesh, the norm of reserving 50% of teaching posts in primary schools for women has proved to be amazingly helpful in improving the stats.

Some stats apart from Goa and Chandigarh

Apart from Goa and Chandigarh, the Places like Kerela, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Delhi and Pondicherry crossed the 70% mark. Where it brings a great joy looking at the stats of these areas in India there, there are some places that are still struggling to cross even 50% mark, like Tripura, where the percentage of female teachers is just 29% and majority of teachers are males.

Are women better teachers?

This question might mean different things to men and women. But the fact is that a teacher is a teacher. We say that men and women are equal but the news that Chandigarh has more female teachers as compared to men certainly talks about women being more oriented towards teaching. When asked, with great joy and pride, Vithoba Dessai came out with the reasons for why women in Goa & Chandigarh have preference for teaching jobs. Accounted by him, the timing of the schools in Goa is adjusted in such a way that helps women to balance their work hours with their family duties. In Goa the school timings are set to 8:15 AM to 1:45 PM, that provides women sufficient time to withstand their duty of being a “housemaker” as well.
