Chandigarh is one of the posh and well-planned cities of India that is on the verge of becoming a smart city soon. But with all development happening at faster pace around the city beautiful, power cuts have become a frequent regime here.
Talking about Chandigarh, southern sectors are the worst hit areas where unscheduled power cuts are often experienced by the people residing there. Now when the city’s temperature is soaring high day-by-day, these power cuts will create a situation of haywire among the citizens.
Sectors that face electricity outage in Chandigarh
Sectors 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29, 31, 34, 37, 38, 40, 41, 43, 44, 45, 48, 49 and 51 face electricity outages frequently in Chandigarh.
However, northern sectors like sector 1 2 3 4 5 7 8 9 10 11 12 15 16 17 18 19 don’t face any kind of power cuts throughout the year. It’s only during the pruning of trees above the street poles and electricity wires or repairing of transformers, they witness power cut for short span of time, which is well planned in advance.
Reason for power cuts in Chandigarh
The major issue of power cuts arises with the increased load of electricity supply during summers, which rises up to 15-20% than in winters. Hence, resulting in the breakdown of transformers. Due to its repair and the maintenance work, the power supply gets interrupted then.
UT electricity department’s say on power cuts in Chandigarh
In spite of the power outage in the southern sectors of Chandigarh, the UT electricity department boasts of having ample back up for the city to supply uninterrupted electricity this summer season. The department is also likely to buy electricity as per the demand. Last year, the demand for electricity in the city was 350 MW, which will increase to 450 MW this summer.
Apart from Chandigarh, its adjoining cities – Mohali and Panchkula also suffer from frequent power cuts in their almost every sector. To tackle up with the problem, now people in the tricity will have to arrange for inverters and gen sets well on time before sweltering heat and humid weather will try to make you sick and lethargic.
