The 2018 World Tourism Week is one of the most awaited events this season and is being organized at the most prominent tourist destination of Chandigarh, which is the Sukhna Lake.

What Do We Know About World Tourism Day? What Makes It So Popular?

The World Tourism Day celebration is an initiative of the United Nations World Tourism Organization. It began in the year 1980 and is celebrated each year on the 27th of September. This day holds a special place in the hearts and minds of the thought leaders behind this idea. The 27th of this month was selected because this was the very day when the UNWTO enforced its laws and rules in the year 1970. This date thus is considered a big landmark for global tourism. These rules and laws of the United Nations World Tourism Organization aim to spread awareness among people about the significance of tourism not just across the local but throughout the international community as well. It is a big opportunity for us to exhibit how our social, cultural, economic and political values have evolved over the years.

The Importance Of World Tourism Day 2018

Coming this Thursday, on 27th of September, we will observe the much awaited event of the year 2018, World Tourism Day. This day is celebrated every year not just in the City Beautiful but across the globe and it has a particular theme every year that helps the organizers make the people aware of various issues that affect our tourism, culture and our socio-economic existence.

The celebrations began in the year 1980 and the theme for that year was “Tourism’s contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage and to peace and mutual understanding”. Ever since the organizers have come up with different themes every year and the theme of 2011 event celebrations which was among the most recent and whose memories are still fresh with us due to its impact was “Tourism Linking Cultures.” In the year 2012 we saw the theme “Tourism and Energetic Sustainability.” The theme of the year 2013 was “Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future”.

This week is the right platform to send out a message to the general public about the importance of tourism. The UNWTO Secretary-General motivates everyone to participate in the occasion just like it is celebrated with great interest and revere by various tourism organizations, enterprises and government agencies, etc. The week is studded with a lot of events and competitions including photography, competitions promoting city tourism, and tourism award ceremonies with free entries, and various discounts/special offers on food and beverages and rides to the general public.

As tourism continues to grow and develop, major economic sectors worldwide have become accessible and their various attractive tourist destinations have come to light. This has become a very important and dependable source of income ‎for developing countries such as ours and this tourism week is one very big way of promoting it.
