Clearing the Dilemma Between Engineering & Humanities

The world is a constantly evolving one. Technology has also been evolving ever since. With the sudden surge in the number of companies working with technology, the necessity for engineers has increased. This, in turn, increased the number of engineering colleges and the number of engineering graduates each year. Thousands and thousands of students had been consistently preparing for advance science exams such as JEE Main, NEET, UGC NET, etc. This has reached its saturation, which is egregious and thus, hinders the growth. Hence, in recent years, courses on Humanities have seen a surge in admissions when compared to courses on engineering.

Learning language and literature has become essential to understand the market trend and to communicate with people accordingly. Humanities courses are being introduced even in engineering curriculum so that students can cope up with the upcoming trends. Humanities instils moral values and ethics in students. Gone are the days when engineering was revered and humanities were thought of as something only in the abstract.  The constant downturn of the engineering field coupled with the umpteen opportunities available in the humanities area is making people realize the importance of humanities.

The world is coming closer by digital means, and one needs to have skills which are multifaceted to favour the integration of businesses. The major reason for the popularity of humanities is that without humanities, there can be no notable changes in the living standard of people. Engineering may improve standards physically, but humanities improve the mental standard of people. With over 2 million engineers graduating every year, only 25% (approx.) of them are actually employable while the rest of them are severely under-equipped. After all the hardships in their path of reaching wherever they are, with the constant fear of cracking entrance examinations such as MU OET 2018, PESSAT 2018, etc, they never really quite achieve what they set out for. Pursuing humanities is also monetarily economic when compared to pursuing engineering. It also offers a plethora of career opportunities to aspiring students in several uncovered and exciting domains. Hence assumptions made by people are erroneous.

Awareness caused by social media is one of the major reasons for this shift. This awareness is mainly due to the wide reach of social media which has provided people with a myriad of information about the pros of pursuing humanities. They were not aware of the number of opportunities which humanities provide. This engenders a way to break the famous myth that engineering is only coveted by academically oriented students while the arts is pursued as a last resort by underperforming students. High school graduates who would usually opt for science because of parental persuasion have now become more aware due to social media campaigns. They go through online blogs and course reviews to get a clear idea about a course and make a carefully educated choice after understanding the pros and cons of that particular course. Such a system paves the way for the creation of better graduates, who are truly passionate about their subject. The passion of the student plays a paramount role in growth, as growth in any domain can be achieved only if each and every individual is passionate about it. Hence, it is completely up to the decision of the student on whether to take up engineering or humanities. However, based on the current trend, an amalgamation of engineering and humanities would pave way for constant growth.
