Section 144 Imposed in Chandigarh | All Schools, Colleges & Educational Institutes Closed For 2 Days

The Chandigarh Administration has decided to keep the Schools, Colleges & Other Educational Institutes in Chandigarh Closed for 2 Days, ahead of the CBI verdict in Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh alleged sexual assault case. Section 144 was imposed in Haryana (Panchkula) a day before and now, Section 144 has also been imposed in Chandigarh. Hundreds of checkpoints have been set up at all entry points of Chandigarh & Panchkula with numerous police force parties and special forces like riot control and black cat commandos.

Why School, College closed in Chandigarh and other areas?

It was reported that around 2 lakh Dera Sacha Sauda followers have already reached Panchkula and have occupied most of the open areas in the city. Initially, the followers were assembling at the Naam Charcha Ghar in Sector 23 in Panchkula but with limited space inside the premises, the Dera followers gradually started spilling from the Naam Charcha Ghar into the entire city of Panchkula.

Covering almost all the city, the dera followers took shelter in Panchkula parks, on road dividers and roadsides along the National Highway-73.  Fearing possibilities of unrest in the region following the verdict by the CBI court, it has been reported that the administration has ordered the educational institutions including Schools and colleges in Chandigarh, Panchkula, Punjab to remain closed on August 24 and 25 in view of the Dera verdict for the safety of the children and staff.

Some schools closed earlier

It was reported that amid increasing tension in Panchkula in the wake of multitudes of Dera Sacha Sauda followers thronging the city, several school authorities in Panchkula unanimously decided to remain closed on Wednesday as well. In some schools in Chandigarh too, the senior wing students were sent home early. The school authorities took this decision as numerous students in these schools reside in different parts of Panchkula where the dera followers are gradually capturing the open spaces as well as roads.

Colleges and University closed too

Fear is gripping Chandigarh region as it was reported that dera followers are stockpiling petrol, diesel and other weapons ahead of the CBI verdict in the alleged rape assault case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, dera Sacha Sauda chief. For the safety of all teaching as well as non-teaching departments of Panjab University and other colleges affiliated to the Panjab University, it was decided that all will remain closed for two days ie August 24 and August 25. The orders came from the home secretary and were immediately implemented.

Citing the security reasons, the Haryana government too has notified two days as a Gazetted holiday in the state. As per reports, all government offices, corporations, boards, educational institutions and banks in Sectors 2, 4, 5 and 6 in Panchkula will remain closed on August 24 and 25. However, offices of essential services will be functional on these two days.
