It is not shocking at all that more than four thousand people recommended ‘Saint Doctor Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan‘ for a Padma award in 2017. I wonder sometimes how he used to handle so many names? Jokes apart! Well, no wonder, those who sent recommendations for Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh wrote this on the recommendations.

Out of the total number recommendations that were received by the Union home ministry, all the recommendations that were marked in the name of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh read as ‘Saint Dr Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan‘. Surprisingly, almost all these recommendations that were received by the home ministry had come from Sirsa where dera Sacha Sauda is headquartered!

He proposed his own name for the Padma Award

Besides these recommendations, the self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the rockstar rapist or the guru of bling, now rape convict did not shy from proposing his own name for the honour. It was reported that rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh had proposed his name for the Padma award five times.

The name of the award recipient was same in all the recommendations but the address was different in all of them. While the rape convict had given the address of Sirsa on three of them, the other two applications had the address of Hissar in Haryana on one and address of Ganganagar in Rajasthan, where he was born, on the second one.

According to report, the documents accessed by the department, out the of the total five recommendations that were proposed by the rape convict himself, one had ‘Saint Dr Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan’s recommendation which had been sent by ‘Saint Dr Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan Saintgorge’.

What are the three Padma Awards?

The three Padma awards are Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day and anyone can nominate any person for the Padma Awards. While Padma Vibhushan is conferred for exceptional and distinguished service; the Padma Bhushan is given for distinguished service of a high order and the Padma Shri is given to the recipient for distinguished service.

The recommendations or nominations for the Padma awards can be received online only on the portal designed by the Ministry of Home Affairs — www.padmaawards.gov.in.

Who can recommend a nominee for the award?

Had this been a public affair, the rapist would have been conferred with the Padma award but in the case of the Padma Awards which are one of the highest civilian honours of India are nominations can also be made by state governments, central and state ministers, UTs, departments of the government of India, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna awardees, chief ministers, governors of state, and Members of Parliament.

Who receives the Padma award?

The Padma awards seek to recognize works of exceptional achievements and distinction in different fields and disciplines. The recipient can be from any field such as art, education, literature, sports, social work, medicine, science and engineering, civil service, public affairs, trade and industry et al. Once the nominations are received, these are placed before the Padma Awards Committee. The Padma Awards Committee is constituted annually by the prime minister of India.
