HOOQ Video Service Launched in India At Rs. 89/month | To Rival Amazon Prime, Hotstar & Netflix

HOOQ is a video on demand service headquartered in Singapore. It is a joint venture between Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, and Singtel. The two-year-old company  HOOQ has finally expanded to India after Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The video-on-demand HOOQ has given strong competition to rival services in the other countries and has forced them to change their strategies. The service was first launched in 2015 in  Singapore and has hence expanded to other parts of the world exponentially. HOOQ also won the award for Best Mobile App in the Media, Film, TV or Video category at the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards 2016.

Competition for the HOOQ video on demand service in India:

HOOQ has to rival the already established services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to sustain in India. These two services hold the maximum customer base in the country. Hotstar is another popular service which is founded by the Star group. The HOOQ CEO says they did quite some research for almost a year before entering the Indian Market. They found that Netflix was focusing on original content and amazon focused more on Bollywood. Hotstar specialised in the sports department. However, there is no one service that was providing the best of both worlds. So HOOQ decided to offer its services in India where it will mainly focus on the Hollywood movies and TV Shows content.

Price and launch of the HOOQ service in India:

When it comes to competition of the HOOQ service in terms of price in the Indian country Netflix charges a serious premium of 500 a month for standard quality, 650 for HD and 800 for ultra HD. Hotstar comes at a feeble 199 a month which seems okay considering the fact it has some original content of it’s own and offers star sports channels to watch your favourite sport live. HOOQ’s main competitor in India Amazon is the most popular and affordable as it costs 499 for an entire year as part of its introductory offer which will later be revised to 999 a year. With these prices HOOQ is single-handedly going to destroy the competition in India at 89 for three months initially. Later the customer will be charged 89 each month.
