Chandigarh is going through a hot summer season with temperatures rising to as high as 45 degrees. The effect of this immense heat can be easily seen at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh. Every year, the water level at lake comes down drastically during summers and the summers of 2016 seem to be no different. Although, the water bed of Sukhna is deep enough, but still the lowering of water level makes way for dried up land to appear within the lake at different places.
As of now, the water level at Sukhna Lake is 1157 feet which is 6 feel feet below normal. If monsoons do not arrive at time in Chandigarh, the water level may decrease further.
Patches of land can be easily seen in the lake at regulator end. However, the water level has not receded too much and no patches are visible from the front side, but if the situation continues, Sukhan Lake may see worse days. Even activities like boating are stopped if the water levels decrease beyond a particular point.
The MET department has said that Chandigarh would receive a good amount of rainfall in coming months. Hopefully, Sukhna Lake will not dry up like it did in year 2012. However, nothing is being done from Administration’s side to control the situation of water level at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh.
