Much anticipated Jeep launch in India

The much anticipated SUV – Jeep Compass finally made an entry in the Indian market. Much lower than the rumored price the Jeep Compass was launched at a very striking sticker price of Rs 14.95 lakh. It was 65 per cent localization coupled with reduced cess on SUVs under the GST reform, that helped the international automobile brand Jeep achieve the aggressive pricing for its first made-in India model – Jeep Compass. Even before launch the appearance of the Jeep were promising and it was expected to set a slay competition in the segment.

Counting on the design 

Undeniably, the newly launched Jeep Compass renders the Jeep DNA. The Jeep Compass resembles its bigger sibling – the Grand Cherokee and appears more like an apposite SUV. Up front, the iconic 7-slat grille finished in gloss black and chrome surround merged beautifully with the clamshell bonnet gives the Jeep Compass a idiosyncratic design. The front design gets merged Iron Man inspired projector headlamps equipped with LED DRLs.

On the other hand, XUV500, home-grown auto maker Mahindra’s flagship model, is one of the best-looking SUV from the company’s SUV product lineup. Up front, Mahindra XUV500 with its 5-slat grille with sharp creases of the front bumper is robust and intimidating with its road presence. The cheetah inspired design language of the Mahindra XUV500 stands out between the two.

The Mahindra XUV500 is the big boy as compared to the Jeep Compass with a taller and wider appearance.

Engine and other driving specifications

While the newly launched Jeep Compass is available in both the petrol and diesel engines the Mahindra XUV500 is only available in Diesel option. The Jeep Compass comes with an option of choosing between 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG AT unit. On the other hand Mahindra XUV500 comes with 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT options.

The petrol Jeep Compass is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged unit that churns out 160bhp of power and 250Nm of peak torque. The diesel model of the newly launched Jeep Compass is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which is efficient in producing 171bhp of power and 350Nm of torque.

While in the case of Mahindra XUV500, it comes with 2.2-litre mHawk engine that pumps 140bhp of power and 330Nm of torque. The Jeep Compass range gets a Select-Terrain system equipped with 4 driving modes. These modes, besides the Auto mode also include Snow, Mud and Sand mode for a comfortable drive on almost every terrain.

While Jeep Compass offers both the 4×2 and 4×4 on the diesel model only while the petrol model comes with only the 4×2 option. On the other hand the Mahindra XUV500 carline is also available with the AWD (All Wheel Drive) drive train (On select trims) while it comes with the FWD system.

Out of both the SUVs, XUV500 offers a larger boot space with a 720-litres capacity whereas Jeep Compass has a storage capacity of 410-litres.

Packed with ultra-modern features 

Line-up of the Jeep’s newly launched SUV Compass gets power-operated ORVMs and a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This option is across all its base variants. The top-spec variants of the Jeep Compass are fully-loaded and get HID headlamps, leather seats, rear camera and other striking features. Some of the other outstanding features that come as standard fitment across the line-up include cruise control, automatic headlamps, reclining second seats, adjustable headrests, front/rear power windows etc.

On the other hand the big boy in the Mahindra stable, the XUV500 comes with electrically adjustable wing mirrors, power windows, one touch lane change indicator, remote tailgate opening, flip-key with remote central locking, flexi seats, rear wash & wipe besides the follow me home headlamps which are standard among other features across the line-up.

Jeep Compass is integrated with touchscreen infotainment. This infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Jeep Compass also boasts of steering wheel mounted controls coupled with Dual-zone auto A/C among other striking features.

The Mahindra XUV500 too comes loaded with technology and salient features that include the auto A/C, electric sunroof, Voice messaging system, Mahindra Blue Sense, tyre pressure monitoring system and other such attractive. The only drawback of the infotainment system in the Mahindra XUV500 is that it does not support Apple CarPlay.

Ensuring safety of the passengers 

To ensure safety inside the Jeep Compass the carline gets dual airbags. This safey feature has been clubbed with Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Traction Control as standard fitments. The SUV is equipped with other safety features including 6-airbags, ABS and ESP along with Panic Brake Assist. These safety features merged with Electronic Brake Prefill, Hydraulic Booster Failure Compensation, cornering fog lamps and the Electronic Rollover Mitigation makes Jeep Compass one of the safest SUV in the segment.

On the other hand, the Mahindra XUV500 too comes loaded with great safety features. This include six airbags, ABS with EBD; Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold and Hill Descent Control. What adds to the safety of the Mahindra XUV 500 is the all wheel disc brake feature.

As compared to the Jeep Compass, the Mahindra XUV500 offers all the necessary features at a much lower price tag.

The Price Factor

While the Jeep Compass carries an inaugural starting price of Rs 14.95 lakh, the Mahindra XUV500 range starts from a pretty economical price tag of Rs 12.12 lakh.

In a country where Mileage does matter! 

The Jeep Compass claims mileage of 17.1 kmpl for the diesel engine whereas the petrol engine of the Jeep Compass claims 13.1 kmpl. On the other hand the XUV500, which is only available in the diesel engine option claims to deliver 16kmpl of ARAI rated fuel economy.

The Face-off Result

Well, the Jeep Compass, Jeep’s most affordable SUV is undeniably going to challenge a wide range of SUVs in the segment but this face off has indeed been challenging for the new comer. While the XUV500 offers a spacious cabin coupled with high-end features, the new Jeep Compass offers an excellent drive, also the off-road drive. Jeep Compass is a little superior technically, but the Mahindra XUV500 is also loaded with incredible features that make it quite tempting. The American brand may be tempting but the home-grown auto brand Mahindra XUV500 has established itself as a trusted and durable brand in the Indian market that tops the selection process with well-balanced pricing and features.
