After the Income Tax Departments has extended the deadline for filing the Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the year 2016-17 till August 5, the taxpayers can now link their Aadhaar cards with Permanent Account Number (PAN) on or before August 31. The deadline of linking Aadhaar card with PAN has been increased as the taxpayers were facing difficulties in doing it. The government of India made the Aadhaar-PAN card linking mandatory for ITR filings from July 1.

The government of India made the Aadhaar-PAN card linking mandatory for ITR filings from July 1.Though over 2 crore taxpayers have already linked their 12-digit biometric Aadhaar issued by UIDAI or the enrollment ID with the PAN, double the number of the later taxpayers are yet to do so.
Steps to follow to link your Aadhaar with PAN
The candidate will have to go on the e-filing website and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’. Now fill your Aadhaar number, PAN number, your name as mentioned in your Aadhaar card and submit it. Now you will get a verification details from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which will confirm your Aadhaar and PAN linking.
In case, if you have already registered yourself on the e-filing website then you can simply click on the Aadhaar linking option as given in your profile settings after logging in to the e-filing website. Now you will have to just enter your Aadhaar number and name to your already existing PAN card details under your profile. Following this, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number for the e-verification of your Aadhaar and PAN linking for the income tax return filing.
If your name is different on your Aadhaar and on your PAN, then your linking of Aadhaar card with PAN will fail. Now the system will request the taxpayer to change their name on either of the database including the Aadhaar card or on you PAN card for which you can log on to UIDAI website or to the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) website.
