Liquor Ban in Chandigarh & Drunk Driving Challans by Traffic Police

Here, is a good news for all those who love Chandigarh city. Since the liquor ban on 1st April, 2017 in Chandigarh, there has been 66% reduction in the number of drunken driving Challans issued by the Chandigarh Traffic Police. With the notification from the supreme court, the liquor was banned within the 50 meters of the highway roads striking straight to the bars and nightclubs in sector 26 and 35.

Effect of The Liquor Ban on Drunken Driving Challans in Chandigarh

According to the sources, with this ban, the numbers on an average, of the drunken driving challans issued by the Chandigarh Police on daily basis, dropped from number “11” between 1st January, 2017 and March 31st to “4” between the time frame of 1st April and 31st May. In the beginning of the year 2017, Chandigarh Police issued 977 Challans for drunken driving in the city. Where many people opposed the idea of liquor ban on the highway roads, there Chandigarh Police felt relieved to see the drop in the number of drunken driving challans to 267 on the city roads between the time period of April 1st and May 31st.

Though news of liquor ban came as a positive outcome for the Chandigarh Traffic Police, there, for many nightclubs and bars, that were located on Madhya Marg covering Sector 26 along with the Himalaya Marg [sector 35], that shut down due to the new order, became a nightmare.

According to the sources directly from the Chandigarh traffic police, the statement came stating that they keep regular check on the drunken driving cases on the roads of Chandigarh and, have become more strict towards the action. And, it is a good news that the numbers of drunk driving has reduced significantly after the supreme court’s order of liquor ban.

Let’s See the numbers of drunken driving in 2017 on Chandigarh Roads

As per the Chandigarh Police, there were 84 drivers caught drunk driving on the roads of Chandigarh in the month of January. In this month only, there were 146 people who were fined for the same offense in the East division of Chandigarh and 92 in the South Division.

Coming to February, where 81 people were caught for drunken driving, there, 113 people were caught in East Chandigarh division and 107 from the South division in Chandigarh for the same. After February, the number took off the mind of Traffic police in the month of March where, 108 drunken driving challans were issued and almost the same number were caught in the East division. The number of people caught in South division for drunken driving in Chandigarh in the month of March turned out to be 132. Where after the liquor ban (since 1st April) the number flushed down to 63 drunk drivers in April and 60 in May.

It has been stated by the sourced from ArriveSafe that the prominent reason for people drinking while driving was the easy access to liquor. And as proved, it was true as the numbers clearly depict. With no availability of the liquor on road has definitely reduced the number of drivers driving in the drunk condition in Chandigarh.
