Both the automakers have claimed the top 10 slots of the passenger vehicles market in India. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has benefited by keeping its focus on the compact car segment. By keeping its focus intact, the carmaker has captured all the top five slots for the best-selling passenger cars for 2017-2018 in the compact car segment.

These are the top sellers on the list

While Maruti Suzuki Alto claimed the number one position the second, third, fourth and fifth positions were claimed by the new launches of the year including next-gen Maruti’s Dzire, next-gen Swift, Baleno and WagonR models. Two other models have made it to the list of top 10 selling cars in India that Include Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the new Celerio. As per a report, about 2,58,000 units of Alto were sold by carmaker Maruti Suzuki in the previous financial year.

In addition to these 7 cars from the Maruti Suzuki stable, the Hyundai cars that made it to the list of top 10-selling passenger vehicles in India include- the Grand i10, Elite I20 and Hyundai Creta.

Competitors losing in the segment

Alto’s prime competitor Renault Kwid dropped out of the list of top 10-selling cars in India after falling sales in the last financial year. It has been reported that the increasing competition has affected sales in the small car segment. All the major car makers including General Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata and even Honda have not been able to taste success in the segment. Less competition by these carmakers has led to the success of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai in the compact car segment in India.  With a little more than 50 percent market share in the Indian car market the stats clearly show that one in every two cars sold in the country are from the Maruti Suzuki stable.
