With NaMo’s Swach Bharat Abhiyan, a movement that emphasized on clean India has been practiced all over the country with great enthusiasm and support from celebrities. Chandigarh being a major city in North India is no doubt one of the cleanest cities but still there isa need for public awareness where people know the location of public toilets in Chandigarh. With the mission to make India a clean country, some of the main objectives of SBM are:
- Construction of individual, cluster and community toilets.
- Elimination of open defecation. It being one of the main causes of deaths of thousands of children each year.
- Construction of latrines and establishment of system for accountable mechanism of monitoring latrine use.
- Creating Public awareness about the drawbacks of open defecation and promotion of latrine use.
- Changing people’s mindset towards proper sanitation use.
- Ensuring solid and liquid waste management through gram panchayats.
Access to toilets remains a huge problem in our country. Lack of toilets puts the health and rural women’s safety at risk. Not only this, open defecation leads to several diseases and hygiene issues. Keeping health of all Indians in mind, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan ensured public and community toilets for all by 2019. With significant process made, cities have seen several public toilets coming up for the citizens of India. In Chandigarh too, a lot of public toilets have been constructed in parks and other public places. But, the problem of location of these toilets still persist.
Toilet Locator App for Chandigarh
To ease out the difficulty of location and to increase the use of public toilets, Technology has decided to lend a helping hand in developing a Clean India by affirmatively pushing Govt’s Swachh Bharat campaign.
UT Advisor Parimal Rai launched mobile application under SBM in Chandigarh with a view to increase large scale participation and citizen awareness among all sections of society. The initiative was put into practice in order to achieve above stated objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission.
Close to 2.5 crore toilets constructed in 2 years and more are expected in coming years. In order to increase awareness about their presence and location and in order to encourage citizens to use toilets, the step of introducing Public Toilet Locator App was a much thought and needed one.
In a program organised by Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, UT advisor launched Swacch Bharat Locator and Swachh App that will help in locating near by toilets. Also, in the program, Mr. Parimal launched GPS (Global tracking system) to track movement of vehicles that are indulged in picking up garbage. A biometric system was also launched to keep a track on the attendances of safai karamcharis working under Chandigarh administration.
