A woman aged 31 years working as a lecturer in a reputed college of Mohali committed suicide at her residence in Mohali, near Chandigarh. The victim named Preeti was working as an English lecturer at Khalsa College in Mohali. She was a native of Samana in Punjab and was living with her husband in a rented accommodation in Phase 3A of Mohali.
As soon as the suicide came to light, police were called and a report was written at Mataur police station. The reason as to why the woman committed suicide is said to be harassment by her husband. No suicide note was found from the place where Preeti committed suicide.
Preeti was married to Kapil. he is said to be working with a medicine company. The woman’s father has said that Kapil used to harass her daughter and due to this harassment, she took the extreme step of suicide. According to Preeti’s father, Kapil used to thrash her and she has told her parents about it from time to time. however, Preeti’s parents always insisted upon maintaining good relations between husband and wife like any parents would do.
It was also revealed that this was Preeti’s second marriage. She had a divorce with her first husband a few years back. Preeti came in touch with Kapil on Facebook and they both decided to get married. According to a report in The Tribune, Preeti’s father was quoted saying that everything went well between her daughter and Kapil for 3 months. Soon after that, he started to harass her daughter. As per reports, Kapil also used to thrash her.
The police have registered a case and action is being taken against Kapil. It is shameful that we are still hearing news of harassment and thrashing incidents. Women need to raise their voice and act boldly instead of taking the extreme step of suicide.
