Homegrown automaker Mahindra and Mahindra is likely to unveil its much- awaited vehicle, the S201 in India soon. In the last one year, the test mule of the vehicle, codenamed S201 has been spotted in India several times. Most recently the S201 by Mahindra was spied with production-ready taillamps that clearly projects that the automaker will unveil the S201 sometime soon, most likely, at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo in Delhi.
On the basis of some of the previous spy shots, it can be clearly stated that the Mahindra S201 (Codename) is not going to be a sub-4 metre SUV. Though reports suggest that the new S201 will be based on the SsangYong Tivoli but it will not carry the dimensions similar to that of the Tivoli. As per the previous reports, the test mule of S201 had been spied testing sporting star-shaped dual-five spoke alloy wheels that have been newly designed for the SUV.
Features of new Mahindra S201 SUV
On the styling front, nothing has been declared officially or unofficially so far. As most of the test mules were seen sporting camouflage, nothing concrete is available on the digital platform to declare the visible features of the S201.
As it is a Mahindra product, it is expected that the new SUV will get some signature Mahindra and Mahindra elements in the new vehicle. The vehicle may get a chrome grille like the new Scorpio facelift, brawny bumpers, besides an option of dual tone paint scheme the new vehicle may also get heavy plastic cladding.
In terms of additional features, the Mahindra S201 may include projector headlamps that will come merged with LED DRLs (daytime running lights). The electrically operable ORVMs may get integrated turn signal lights. There is a chance that the automaker may include some design inputs from its Italian subsidiary for an improved layout of the upcoming S201 compact SUV.
Under the hood of the new Mahindra S201 SUV
Though nothing has been officially declared, yet the new Mahindra S201 (codename) is expected to come with both diesel and petrol powertrain options. It has been reported that the S201 will most likely get the new 1.6-litre diesel engine in addition to the brand new 1.5-litre petrol unit which is currently under development.
The new compact SUV may certainly get a 5-speed manual transmission option as standard fitment but there is a chance that the carmaker may mate an AMT unit to the engines.
The new SUV may get two different variants in India
Mahindra’s upcoming SUV – codenamed S201 is reported to be based on the Mahindra owned SsangYong Motor Company’s SUV – SsangYong Tivoli. Currently, the automaker manufactures two different variants of the Tivoli. While SsangYong Tivoli standard is the smaller variant of the SUV, in terms of dimension, the SsangYong Tivoli XLV is the bigger sibling of the SUV that is used for additional boot space in the international market.
For the Indian spec models, Mahindra may use this increased space to offer the third-row seats. So, as per the report, there is a chance that the automaker might offer two variants of the S201 a smaller 5-seater compact SUV and a larger SUV with 5+2 seating configuration. Mahindra may also bring in changes in the car as per the country specifications.
