PU Chandigarh to Have Manmohan Singh as an Economics Professor

Panjab University is one such place in Chandigarh that is always in news for its buzz of events and the happening on-campus life. This university has always been famous for being a place of study of many iconic figures. One such symbol of prestige for this university is the former prime minister of India and a well-known economist Dr. Manmohan Singh. According to sources, Dr. Manmohan Singh has been offered a chair at PU and he will teach Economics at his alma mater in Chandigarh.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was the prime minister of India for 10 years and after being succeeded by Narendra Modi in 2014. He currently serves as the member of Rajya Sabha from Assam. He graduated from PU Chandigarh in year 1954 and after doing his Master’s degree, he joined PU in Chandigarh as a senior lecturer in year 1957. He became a professor in 1963. As of now, Dr. Manmohan Singh will again be joining Panjab University, Chandigarh and will hold the Jawahar Lal Nehru chair.

Manmohan Singh will be Joining PU, Chandigarh

The parliamentary forum has already given him the permission to do so, but Dr. Singh has not finalize the schedule. According to the constitution, it is prohibited for any legislator or any member of parliament to hold a position with benefits – may it be monetary or non-monetary. To discuss on this query, PU Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof. Arun Kumar Grover gave a full fledged presentation to the parliamentary forum. This meeting was arranged by the parliamentary forum on Thursday where official representatives from finance department, HRD (Human Resource Development) ministry and Law ministries were present.

The former PM’s enquiry as to joining this job will lead to his disqualification as an MP or not was then given a conclusion in favour of Dr. Singh and hence Dr. Singh was given permission to join PU as his job wont be aiming to draw benefits or any profits.

Dr. Manmohan Singh will not be getting a fixed salary from PU but he will be getting daily allowances upto a fixed maximum limit which will not be against the office of profit law. This meeting of the forum with the finance department, HRD and Law ministries thus has agreed to the proposal by Dr. Singh.

Dr. Manmohan singh will be soon finalizing the schedule and his date of visiting PU. Further, Dr. Singh is keen to interact with students and staff members at PU Chandigarh. Well, it will be good to have our former Prime Minister back in the city.
