In a strategic move, Punjab has announced that freedom fighters and media persons will not have to pay toll tax at any toll plaza across the state. Punjab is the land of freedom fighters and great heroes who fought for their country before independence. Overwhelmed by these valiant heroes, the Punjab government has recently issued a notice, exempting freedom fighters to pay toll tax anywhere across the state.
Toll tax exemption for freedom fighters in Punjab
On the direction of the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, the Punjab Public Works Department (PWD) has released the notification that all freedom fighters having a Punjab issued certificate will not have to pay the toll tax exemption on state highways.
Why was the notification released by Punjab government
The exemption notification is issued because the Congress-led Punjab government was always committed to offer respect to the freedom fighters of India, giving them the place of honor and privilege across the state.
There is another good news for the media person working across Punjab. Recently, Punjab government had also released a notification mentioning that accreditated media persons and journalists are also exempted from paying the toll tax across the state. Any contractor, charging any of these exempted categories of commuters with the toll tax will be prosecuted legally.
Why are toll tax collected
Toll tax is the fees levied by the contractor or builder to recover the expenditure made in making the road/ highway/ bridge. These toll taxes varies from the type of vehicle you are driving and from district to district.
Those exempted to pay toll tax in Punjab
Apart from freedom fighters, categories of commuters who are exempted from paying toll tax anywhere across India are-
- Any defence personnel from- Army, Navy or Air Force
- Physically challenged person
- All accreditated media person or journalists
This was the great initiative by the Punjab government to pay back the freedom fighters across the state for the efforts and the heroism they have put in for the independence of the country.
