Punjab | New Govt. to Cancel Permit of 9251 Private Buses in Punjab

Captain Amrinder Singh’s Government has started making the people of Punjab believe that it was a right decision to chose Congress Government. First, Captain Amrinder Singh’s government started with the re-furnishing of roads in Mohali. Now, as per Captain Amrinder Singh government’s new transport policy, 9251 buses are all set to be taken off the road in Punjab.

9251 buses which are set to be taken off are owned by around 100 companies. The permit for these buses was given during the SAD-BJP rule from 2007-2017. Orbit Aviation and Dabwali Transport, companies of former chief minister Sukhbir Badal are also set to be taken off under the new transport policy by the Congress Government. The policy is expected to be announced in the coming week.

Private Bus Permits Cancelled

The private permits have been cancelled because the operators were functioning their buses 15km to 24km more than the approved schemes. The government will be cancelling 684 permits of state-owned buses and the list also included 1840 illegal renewals and extensions.

Some drivers got their licenses to operate air-conditioned buses from Chandigarh to Delhi, Gurgaon and Jaipur illegally. As per the transport documents, STUs (State Transport Undertakings) – PRTC (Punjab Roadways Transport Corporations), PUNBUS ( Punjab State Bus Stand Management Company) and Punjab Roadways have been bearing heavy losses. They are bearing heavy losses because they could not compete with the private operators.

A PIL (Public Interest Litigation) was filed by two Punjab residents stating that politicians with stakes in the transport business were allowing bus route permits and were violating norms as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Last year, Punjab and Haryana High court extended and increases the route trips of the buses.

New Permits To Be Issued

An official said that as per their proposal, the new permits should be issued first and then the old permits should be cancelled. State’s Advocate General will have the final call on this decision and then accordingly a reply would be filed in the court. The government will then cancel the routes. The State Department found out that 7000 bus routes were violating the norms

Captain Amarinder Singh’s government had announced the new transport policy in their first cabinet meeting.
