Tricity appears to be on the verge of turning into a battleground with dera followers stockpiling petrol, diesel and other weapons ahead of the CBI verdict in the alleged sexual assault case against dera Sacha Sauda chief Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on the August 25. Evident from the recent reports as well as from the statements by dera followers it can be said that the situation is going to take a disastrous shape if the verdict goes against the dera chief.
Swelling number of followers not a good sign
Strengthening the possibilities of a worse situation in the region especially in the Haryana state, it appears the security arrangements by the governments have gone for a toss as the number of followers in the vicinity of the CBI court as well as at various centers across the country is increasing every hour.
Despite knowing the sensitivity of the case, the administration failed to implement full-proof plan to keep any tense situation at bay. Merely three-days before the verdict, a large number of sect chief’s followers started descending in Panchkula, where the hearing in the alleged rape case is scheduled. According to reports, Dera head’s followers swarmed the district court premises in Panchkula Sector 1 last week that unearthed the security arrangements of the police.
Futile efforts of imposing section 144
Sensing possibilities of unrest in the state following the verdict by the CBI court on August 25, the district administrations have imposed section in several cities in the state to maintain the law & order in the state and its neighboring states. In addition to the Section 144 imposed in Gurgaon as well, the district administration in Gurgaon has also imposed Section 144 with immediate effect on the bulk sale of fuel as well. Most of the followers are believed to be entering the city in wee hours to avoid any Police verification or any such checking at the check-posts.
Shocking video of followers building a war force
The shocking videos that have been captured at various places in Panchkula and the roads leading to Panchkula, especially the Zirakpur-Old Panchkula highway don’t affirm that section 144 has been implemented and executed in the area. Hundreds of people including men, women and kids of all ages are seen marching towards the court premises and also assembling on the roads and other open areas. The swelling number of followers is indeed shocking because of the fact that security agencies were busy in strong frisking of auto-rickshaws, buses, cars and other transport vehicles on the Zirakpur-Panchkula highway.
Much similar to the political show of strength rally, thousands of Dera Sacha Sauda head flocked the city from every nook and cranny of the country especially from neighbouring states Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab et al. Earlier this week, in addition to the police force in the three states – Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, the Centre had also approved 35 companies of paramilitary forces to assist the police forces to maintain law and order in the region.
Problem for the residents in neighborhood
The crowd has raised tension in the neighborhood. With limited area inside the dera’s Naam Charcha Ghar the followers are gathering outside the premises, which is increasing panic amid the residents in the neighbourhood. Well, this will also increase sanitation problem in surrounding making a mockery of PMs Swachh Bharat Mission.
There is some think up behind this move and it appears everything is so well planned! To cater to the hunger pangs 24-hour langar sewa has already started inside the premises. Crowd has suddenly started pouring in hundreds and is gradually increasing the force. Followers have even set up stalls for medicines, food, and other basic services.
Beefed up security plans
As reported, over 60,000 Dera Sacha Sauda followers have already gathered, and the number is expected to touch more than 10 lakh by Friday. According to sources, more than 1.5 lakh followers have already reached Panchkula but are scattered across the state. The Panchkula police are on their toes to maintain the law and order in the region. In the intervening time, the Chandigarh administration has decided to convert the cricket stadium in Sector-16, Chandigarh into a temporary jail for a day. The stadium can be used as a jail where at least 10,000 people can be kept.
Security has also been intensified in and around the special CBI court in Panchkula. Bomb disposal squad and dog squad have been included in the set up for added security. The whole nation is now waiting for the verdict that will be will be pronounced by the special CBI court in sexual exploitation case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Dera Sacha Sauda chief on August 25.
Dera chief has been told to be present at the CBI court for the verdict on August 25, but sources say that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh may choose to appear via video conference instead.
Though followers of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and the members of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect are typically a boisterous lot, it’s time to keep our fingers crossed and pray for peace in the city.
