Srinagar Gets Snowfall in April | Highway Blocked, Schools Closed

Srinagar experienced unexpected snowfall in the month of April 2017. Due to the snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, a lot of destruction has been done. People are facing a shortage of food, the schools have been shut down, a lot of people are stuck on the roads as the Jammu-Srinagar national highway has also stopped operating.

Heavy Snowfall in Srinagar

The residents of Srinagar woke to snowfall which is a rare sight in the month of April in Srinagar. The 300 km-long Jammu-Srinagar has been closed and landslides and shooting stones were seen at various places in Srinagar.

The weather department has predicted that in higher ranges of the valley there will be moderate to higher snowfall. Apart from the humans, cattle are also suffering because of the shortage of food. Trucks loaded with cattle have been stuck up since last three days near Udhampur.

The MET department officials said that there is a possibility of more snowfall and rain in some areas in the next 48 hours.

Problems Due to Srinagar Snowfall

Due to the heavy and unexpected snowfall, the army picket in Ladakh got buried and three soldiers have gone missing. However, two soldiers have been rescued but the other three are still missing. Specially trained avalanche rescue teams have been employed and the search for the missing soldiers is on.

The movement of traffic has been stopped as the roads are blocked at various places which include Chanderkot, Peerah, Sarga, Battery Cheshma, Anookhi fall, Digdol, Panthyal, Ramsoo, Gangroo, Karol, Mehar,and Nashri.

It is expected that the roads will start operating from Friday as the snow clearance is in progress at Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop sectors.

Chily Nights In Srinagar

The temperature at night at most of the places in Kashmir has gone down. In Srinagar, the temperature went down and the temperature recorded was 1.8-degree celsius whereas the temperature last night was 3.1-degree celsius.

The Pahalgam hill resort located in south Kashmir is the base camp of the Amarnath Yatra. The temperature at night which was recorded there was minus 0.2-degree celsius.

Let’s hope that the situation in Srinagar gets stable as soon as possible!
