Supreme Court Extends Deadline to link Aadhaar with Mobile Numbers to March 31

The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar with mobile numbers to March 31. The court also refused to grant any stay for linking of Adhar with several government schemes. Earlier the deadline for linking Aadhar with mobile numbers was February 6, 2018. A five-judge Supreme Court bench ordered to extend the date of completion of the E-KYC process for mobile numbers to March 31, 2018.

The March 31 deadline is also applicable for linking Aadhaar with bank accounts provided that the person applying for a new bank account furnishes the proof of having applied for Adhar card. The revised Aadhar linking date would be applicable for central and state government schemes.

Linking Aadhaar with PAN card

Regarding the seeding of PAN cards with Aadhar, the Supreme Court bench said that the matter had already been clarified earlier in the June 2017 order. A two-judge bench upheld the move to link PAN with Aadhaar said that people who already have Aadhaar must link it with their PAN card. Those who don’t have an Aadhaar card, their PAN should not be considered as invalid until the Court adjudicate that whether the Aadhar scheme violates the Article 21 of the constitution or not.

Deadline to link Aadhaar with Mobile numbers

Attorney General K K Venugopal told that an earlier order of the Supreme Court on February 6, 2017, had directed that the government’s E KYC program of verifying phone numbers with the unique identity number is to be completed in one year. Accordingly, the deadline was fixed as February 6, 2018.

The Supreme Court bench was hearing the petitions of challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar Act and the related notifications for linking the Aadhaar with various government schemes. The five bench cleared on Friday that the Supreme Court directions were an interim measure for linking of Aadhaar with several government schemes.

Supreme Court bench also said that the resolution of the issues regarding Aadhaar should proceed as soon as possible. This will offer clarity to the citizens and the union on one hand and to state governments on the other hand. The final hearing on linking of Aadhaar numbers with the government schemes will commence on January 17, 2018.
