UGC Makes Changes For Phd & M.Phill Candidates | Admission Policy & More

University Grants Commission (UGC) has changed the weightage process for Ph.D. admission from the new session 2018. The much controversial selection rule for the research students, UGC has finally scrapped viva & oral interviews process for the new session. As it has has been the sole criteria for the admission in any of the UGC approved University for Ph.D. students.

After approving the online courses in the Deemed Universities for the students from the 2018 session. UGC has also adopted many changes to make higher education much better for the students opting for the same from the all fresh session.

UGC amended 100% Weightage for Ph.D. interview

Higher education regulatory has amended UGC to make 100% weightage for the selection of candidates for Ph.D. Out of the 100%, 70% will be of the weightage of performance in the written exam whereas 30% will be of viva or the interviews. And the same has been amended by the regulatory body in the year 2016 only. University Grants Commission has been now focusing on all the rules in benefit to the students as well.

Also UGC grant relaxation to the students of the reserved category. And this relaxation has been off 5% on the total weightage of written examfor the admission in the Ph.D. On one hand where the general category candidate has to secure atleast 50% in the entrance exam, on the other hand, reserved category candidates can qualify it with just 45% of marks from the new session. More decisions taken by UGC for higher education Students

Earlier to this, some Universities under the UGC (University Grants Commission) do not follow the uniform admission policy. With changes in the Ph.D. admission policy, UGC has also made written exam mandatory for the selection of a candidate. Some more rules implemented by the UGC for 2018 Ph.D courses are-

  • Professor can’t guide more than 7 Ph.D. scholars & 3 M.Phill Scholars.
  • Whereas associate professor can only guide a maximum of 6 Ph.D. scholars & 2 M.Phill Scholars.
  • And assistant professor can only attend 1 M.Phill & 4 Ph.D scholar.

Even the UGC has turned 9 autonomy to Deemed University including names like- BITS Pilani, TIFR, IIFT, SRM, Bharati Vidyapeeth & more.
