Special mobile booths known as Water ATM will be set up across Chandigarh at major locations to deal with water scarcity in the city and offer RO purified drinking water to people. The concept of Water ATM is soon catching up in all modern cities of India & Chandigarh is one of the leading cities to adopt such Water ATMs.
The first water ATM in the region was set up in Mohali last year i.e. in 2015. This time in 2016, Chandigarh Administration & Municipal Corporation have given nod to setting 20 water ATMs in the city at major locations. The contract for these mobile ATM machines has been given to a private company. All water ATM in Chandigarh will have a special RO system and the quality of the water will be measured & displayed on top of the booth at all time.
How a Water ATM Works
Water ATM booths have an automated water dispensing machine. A big RO purifier works in the back along with a water chiller machine which dispenses water for people. The machine is quite simple to operate as one simply has to make it functional by pressing a button. Water ATM gives 3 types of options.
- 250 ml Water Glass
- 1 Litre Water Bottle.
- 10 Litre Water Jar
The required option can be chosen from the machine. However, in order for the machine to work, you’ll have to put in a coin of the required denomination so as to operate the water ATM. Once you select an option and put a coin, the water ATM will dispense the required quantity of RO purified water and you can simply collect that just as you collect cash from an ATM machine.
It was stated that the water ATM in Chandigarh will have the facility where you can exchange money notes for coins as the machine would only accept coins.

20 water atm booths will be set up in Chandigarh at different locations. The locations that have been chosen are the areas which are generally the crowded ones. Some finalized locations for Water ATM in Chandigarh include:

Cost of Water at Chandigarh’s Water ATM
Anyone can get water from these ATMs by putting a coin. The rates of water are very nominal.
- A 250 ml Glass of Water = Rs. 2.
- A 1-Litre Bottle of Water = Rs. 5.
Getting a chilled glass of water at this cost is surely something everyone of us would like to have. Earlier, people had to spend Rs. 20 to purchase a water bottle to quench their thirst.
