The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formulated the regulations which revolve around the teacher students ratios in different colleges and universities located around different parts of the country. Whereas, the Patna University (PU) along with some other universities have revealed stats which portray that there is a shortage of the faculty in the colleges and universities.
This is a common sight all over but the institutes available for pursuing the higher education degrees in Bihar face it on a rather larger scale. For every 3-4000 students as small as 4-5 teachers are available. This shows that not only the figures set by the UGC are being violated but the students are also suffering academically with the availability of less number of teachers to help them out.
Student-Teacher Ratio in Bihar Colleges | Current Scenario
There is a shortage of teachers in the colleges for the postgraduate courses in Bihar as there is a shortage in the appointment in context to the requirement of the teachers from the last 15 years. The Patna University has only a short number of 360 students for a student number which is more than 20,000.
Also, the Magadh University has a very less number of 2,000 for a student population which sums up to a total of two lakh students overall. As per the sources, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) formulated an advertisement for the requirement of 3,400 teachers to function on the post of assistant professors whereas not even fifty percent of them got filled. The new regulations which are formulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC), it should be ensured that a minimum of one teacher is available for every 10 students at the different postgraduate departments pursuing their degrees in fields like science as well as media and mass communication studies.
Also, one teacher for every 15 students should be available in fields like commerce and management, social sciences and humanities. In addition to this, for the undergraduate courses, one teacher should be available for every 25 students. The prevalent ratio for the social science stream is 1:30 whereas for that of science is 1:25.
