Here we compare the new Hyundai Verna against its biggest rivals in the segment the Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Time to see which machine comes up on top in this spec comparison.
The all-new 2017 Hyundai Verna is in its 5th generation globally. The midsize sedan new Hyundai Verna has finally made it to India and has been launched at a price of Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The 2017 Hyundai Verna rivals the very popular Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. Both the rivals have recently received a facelift and have made the competition tougher for the all-new 2017 Hyundai Verna in the segment.
War between the Diesel engine and gearbox
The new Hyundai Verna 2017 gets the largest in its class petrol engine as well as a 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine, which is again the largest in its class.
The turbo 4-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine of the Hyundai Verna produces a class leading 126 bhp of peak power and 260 Nm of peak toque. On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz makes 89 bhp and 200 Nm from Maruti tried and tested 1.3-litre diesel DDiS engine, while the Honda City’s tuning is far lower in terms of power and torque. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine churns out a meager 99 bhp and 200 Nm of peak power and peak torque.
In terms gearbox configurations, the Honda City as well as the Hyundai Verna get the 6-speed manual transmission units while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz gets a 5-speed unit. Both the Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz miss out on the automatic gearbox with the diesel engine while the new Hyundai Verna gets a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel unit comes mated to the 1.6-litre diesel motor.
Features- Exterior and overall design
In terms of exterior dimensions, all the three competitors the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz are similarly sized. At 4490 mm, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the longest car among the trio. While the Hyundai Verna and the Honda City both measure 4440 mm.
In width, The Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz both measure 1729 and 1730 mm respectively while the Honda city is a little narrower at 1695 mm.
At 1475 mm, the Hyundai Verna is the lowest car in the comparison while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz stands at 1485 and the Honda City at 1495 mm. The wheelbase on both the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna is identical at 2600 mm while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is longer by 50 mm at 2650 mm.
As compared to the older design, the new Hyundai Verna carries a more progressive approach in terms of design. Both, the Hyundai Verna as well as the Honda City get DRLs (daytime running lights) while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz missies out on this feature. In the headlamp area, while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Hyundai Verna both get projector headlamps, the Honda City, on the other hand only offers LED headlamps, that too in the top spec car.
The top of the line versions of all three cars Hyundai Verna, Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz get a set of 16-inch alloy wheels. The Honda City and Hyundai Verna get diamond cut alloy wheels, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz on the other hand gets a smart set of gunmetal grey wheels.
What adds to the styling of the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna is the sun roof options that is offered in the top of the line variants while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz misses out this feature too.
Interiors, Safety and Equipments
The new Hyundai Verna comes loaded with interior equipments. The car gets grey and beige two tone interior package merged with a brushed grey finished centre console. The Hyundai Verna also gets a large 7-inch touch screen. This system is equipped with an inbuilt navigation system. In terms of connectivity options, the Hyundai Verna gets Apple CarPlay, Android Auto as well as MirrorLink. Both the other competitors get touch screen infotainment systems and navigation but the Honda City gets only MirrorLink whereas on the other hand, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz gets both the Apple CarPlay and the Android Auto.
Optional leather interiors are available in all the three cars on the top of the line models in addition to the rear AC vents that all the three cars get. All the three cars get two Airbags as a standard fitment in all models excluding the top models of the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna. The top of the line variants of the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna get six airbags.
Front cooled and ventilated seats are an added feature of the Hyundai Verna. This is a first in class feature that the Hyundai Verna gets in the segment.
Price of the sedan and value
As far as pricing is concerned, the Hyundai Verna is priced right in the middle of the Ciaz and City price range. The new Hyundai Verna has been launched in India at an introductory price of Rs. 7.99 lakh. This is a great value for money package for the buyers who are not looking for a completely loaded package.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz tops the chart with 28.09 kmpl, followed by the Honda City’s 25.6 kmpl whereas, with more powerful engine, the Hyundai Verna claims 24.75 kmpl. The automatic Hyundai Verna Diesel claims 21.05 kmpl.
Hyundai Verna is priced in India between Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 12.61 lakh while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is priced between Rs 8.6 lakh to Rs 13.51 lakh and the Honda City at Rs 9.51 lakh to Rs 15.71 lakh.
