A new Fiat SUV based on the recently launched Jeep Compass might launch soon. It has been reported that Jeep’s Compass will provide a platform for Fiat’s new SUV. In addition to the platform, Jeep will also provide some mechanicals in the new SUV being conceptualised by Fiat. Though the launch dates are still sketchy, Fiat is hopeful of the launching the new SUV soon.
Fiat’s new SUV in India
It has been reported that Fiat is working on the development of a new SUV which will be based on the Jeep Compass. Fiat’s ownership of Jeep brand will offer great assistance to the company to develop the new SUV. Chrysler, the parent company of Jeep is owned by Fiat motors.
Fiat car platforms are being used to develop many new Jeep SUVs. Lately, the Fiat Small Wide platform has been utilised for developing Jeep Renegade and the Jeep Compass, that was recently launched in India and has already crossed 10, 000 unit mark last month. Fiat SUV will also take on Mahindra XUV 500.
Fiat, the largest automobile manufacturer in Italy, has started working on a SUV which is believed to be based on the Jeep Compass. Fiat had plans to launch the SUV’s globally last year but the launch was put on hold due to projects like Argo hatchback, yet-to-be-revealed X6S sedan and few other models.
Fiat SUV likely to get features similar to Jeep Compass
As per the report, rumour is, that the company is working on SUV which is likely to be based on the Jeep Compass that was recently launched in the Indian market. Jeep Compass within two months of its release touched the 10, 000 mark. Mahindra XUV500 is already a best seller in ts segment.
Fiat had plans to launch the SUV earlier but the development of the new SUV by Fiat was put on hold by the company nearly a year ago. The project was put on hold for over a year to allow the completion of other projects by Fiat. Now, when Fiat is back on the development of the new SUV it plans to get styling cues for the new SUV from the Torro pick-up truck.
The truck shares various specifications as well as the platform with the Jeep Compass, hence, the new Fiat SUV is going to be based on the Jeep Compass. Fiat SUV is also said to compete with Mahindra XUV500.
Technical specifications of the Fiat SUV based on Jeep Compass
The new Fiat SUV which is under development is likely to get the 1.8 petrol engine that produces 138 hp and another option of Multi-jet diesel powertrains that produces 170 hp.
While the smaller engine of the SUV is likely to be mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the diesel engine is likely to get a 9-speed automatic or a 6-Speed manual gearbox. In terms of drive setup, the petrol is expected to come with a front wheel drive setup, while the diesel unit will come with a FWD or four-wheel drive options similar to Mahindra XUV 500.
The new Fiat SUV is expected to get 5-inch Uconnect infotainment system, reverse-parking sensors and camera and a panoramic glass roof. On the safety end, the new SUV from Fiat may get seven airbags.
