Shimla gets first snowfall of the season: December 2014

Shimla known as the queen of hills got its first snowfall of the winter season over the second weekend of December 2014. The minimum temperature in Shimla was recorded at 3 degree Celsius. The surrounding hill stations of Kufri, Fagu, Narkanda etc. have also received snowfall.

Normally, Shimla receives snowfall around Christmas or New Year but this time it is just the second week of December and Shmla has been covered in a white blanket of snow. Life in the region was affected but this snowfall has attracted a lot of tourists from the plain regions. Being a weekend, people from Chandigarh and other regions of Punjab flocked to Shimla to see the snowfall. High traffic jams were witnessed on the Chandigarh – Shimla highway and people were seen playing with snow by parking their cars on the road side near Shimla.

The snowfall at Shimla has resulted in a heavy rainfall in Chandigarh. The temperature in Chandigarh has dropped several degrees and many flights as well as trains have been cancelled. It is raining continuously from the last 2 days in Cahndigarh.

Before the snow, Shimla was lashed by heavy rainfall measuring 20 cm on Saturday. Jakhoo (Hanuman Temple) was the first region of Shimla to experience this first snowfall of the winter season. This early snow was welcomed by the people of Shimla. However, the meteorological department has described this snowfall as mild and have said that more snow is expected in the coming days till the end of December.
