After seeking feedbacks in context to the appointment of the teachers as well as the other academic staff in the different colleges and universities, UGC has drafted a new set of regulations regarding the minimum qualification of the teaching faculty at various places. UGC which stands for University Grants Commission had sought feedback from many different stakeholders till 28th February 2018 and has now laid regulations regarding the same.

The UGC NET is conducted every year in order to determine the eligibility of the Indian Nationals for the Eligibility of the Assistant Professor only or the Junior Research Fellowship as well as the eligibility of Assistant Professors both in the Indian Universities and colleges.

UGC has proposed regulations related to appointment as well as the rest other service conditions for the teaching faculty of various universities and colleges. A minimum qualification for the appointment of the teachers as well as the other academic staff will now be required so as to maintain the standards in the higher education, 2018. However, the CBSE conducted UGC NET will remain to be the minimum eligibility test for the interested students applying for the assistant professor as well as the equivalent positions.

Additionally, a PhD degree will now be considered important in order to qualify for the appointment as well as the promotion for the associate professor post. in the different universities and colleges with effect from 1st July 2021. A PhD degree shall be mandatory if the date of eligibility falls on the qualification after 1st July 2021.

Adding to the need of having a PhD degree for qualification necessarily, the interested students should note that anyone who obtains the PhD degree from any university or institution which is on the list of the top 500 World University ranking by QS, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) as well as Times Higher Education (THE), the candidate shall be eligible to be hired to work at the position of assistant professor through direct means. Also, the teachers’ workload in case of full employment should be at least 40 hours per week for a number of 180 teaching days that is 30 working weeks. The induction program for the assistant professors should be conducted for a period of 1 month.
