UPSC IAS Exam (Civil Services) From 29th Sep | Know Paper Pattern & Stages in Detail

UPSC IAS Exam: Union Public Service Commission has released the examination schedule for the UPSC Civil Services Main Examination 2018. Candidates who have cleared the Prelims Exam of Civil Services and applied for the Main Exam can check the timetable on the official website. the Exam is scheduled to begin on 29th September. Here are the details regarding the Examination Pattern and Stages for the Civil Services Exam 2018.

UPSC IAS Exam –  Examination Pattern & Stages

Stages: Union Public Service Commission conducts the UPSC Civil Service Exam (IAS Exam) on two Stages. The first stage of the exam is the Preliminary Examination and the second stage is the Main Examination. The first stage i.e the Preliminary Stage is conducted to select the candidates for the Main Examination.

The candidates who will clear the Prelims exam will go to appear in the Main Examination. The Prelims Exam is an Objective type paper while the Main exam is the written examination. The Civil Service Main also includes the Interview. The Main Examination of Union Public Service Commission Civil Service Exam is conducted to select the candidates for the various posts and services.

Pattern of UPSC IAS Exam: As said above the exam is conducted in two stages – Preliminary and Main. The Preliminary Examination of the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Exam will be objective type paper. The Prelims exam consists of two Paper – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Total marks of the Prelims exam is 400 marks. This preliminary examination is the screening test only and select candidates for the Main Examination.

Both the papers in the Preliminary Exam of the UPSC Civil Services are compulsory and both questions papers of the Civil Services Exam are objective type MCQ. Each paper will be of 2 hours. The Prelims exam is qualifying in nature and keep in mind that for each wrong answer there will be negative marking. If a candidate marks more than one answer than it will be treated as the wrong answer. It is important that candidates also go through UPSC syllabus in detail.

In the Main Examination of UPSC – Union Public Service Commission Civil Services (IAS Exam), there will be total 9 papers. Out of these 9 papers of Civil Services, 2 papers are Qualifying papers and these papers are not considered for merit. Rest of the 7 Papers are considered for the merit purpose. The first two papers of the Civil Services Exam are language papers and includes English Paper and second paper of candidates own language choice paper.

The second category consists of 7 papers and these papers are considered for the merit purpose. These 7 papers include 4 General Studies Papers and 2 optional papers. In the optional papers, candidates can choose any subjects. Language Paper 1 and Language Paper 2 will be of total 600 marks. Rest of the Papers will be of 250 marks each.
