IGNOU is one of India’s prestigious educational institutes that offer various correspondence and distant learning courses. It is one of the largest Universities in the world with over four million students across India and is run by the central government. IGNOU has produced great alumnus including actresses Deepika Padukone and Celina Jaitly, Jharkhand former CM, Arjun Munda, Founder and Owner of Filmy Keedey, Nishant Srivastava, and many other top notch entrepreneurs.
But this time IGNOU is creating a buzz nationally for doing something extraordinary. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has awarded a gold medal to one of its students who is serving life imprisonment at Varanasi Central Jail.
IGNOU awarded gold medal to a prisoner serving life imprisonment
A 30- year old Suresh Bind, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Barrack No. B-4, Varanasi Central Jail, for committing murder due to land dispute. While serving his penance in the jail, Suresh pursued diploma in tourism from IGNOU. Now he has completed the course scoring highest 72 percent marks amongst thousand of students enrolled under this programme of IGNOU across India.
Today, IGNOU conducted its 29th convocation at the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) campus and felicitated Suresh along with other students. Clad in a prisoner’s attire and accompanied by the police force, Suresh accepted the gold medal by the Vice Chancellor of the BHU. The prisoner was so excited to receive the gold medal that he had urged the jail administration to arrange for the convocation ceremony at BHU.
IGNOU and its relation with prisoner students
This is not the first time, when IGNOU had awarded gold medal to a jail prisoner. It is the second consecutive year after Ajit, a prisoner from the same jail was awarded with a gold medal by IGNOU in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Suresh belongs to a small village Dobra Kala of district Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. Despite of his conviction and jail imprisonment, he was good in studies. He is a graduate in Arts and now Diploma holder in tourism course from IGNOU. Suresh always aimed to become a lawyer and now he has enrolled himself in the Dairy Technology course. Suresh is also a good cricketer and had scored centuries many times in the league matches held in the jail. His father is a farmer while his younger brother is a scientist at Sanjay Bhabha Research Centre.
