IMA Dehradun, Everything You’d Like To Know About the IMA Campus

IMA, Dehradun, the place where the military is trained, the defences are gained and the polished military men are groomed. Indian Military Academy, the place where NDA qualifiers are hosted and nourished to become capable of defending the nation, is the finest campus in India till date. This is the centre of training for the NDA, CDSE and TGC qualifying candidates.

IMA [Indian Military Academy], Dehradun History

Indian Army is the third largest army in World, and IMA, Dehradun is the campus from where these remarkable officers and soldiers pass through to become astonishing legends. Functional from 1st October 1932, Indian Military Academy has been nourishing many of the legendary army personals. With the first batch of 40 gentlemen cadets including Brigadier L.P. Collins, DSO, OBE, this place gave birth to several legendary officers including Sam Manekshaw, Smith Dun, and, Muhd. Musa. Later after training at this very land, they became army chiefs of their respective areas being India, Burma and, Pakistan. Since then this campus has never led down India for generating best army personals.

Hosting the land of over 1400 acres, IMA is one of the significant campuses for the training of NDA, TGC and CDSE passing out candidates, that is standing from pre-independence time. Located on the foothills of Himalayas over 8 km west of Dehradun-Chakrata road and 3 Km beyond F.R.I, the campus comes on the National Highway 72, separating North and South campuses. This IMA Building in Dehradun is also flagged with the name ‘Chitwode Building’. This name came from the Field Marshal Sir Philip Chetwode, who was Commander-in-Chief of India.

Chetwode Hall and Khetarpal Auditorium, IMA – This Chetwode Hall on the Drill Square is known for housing the administrative headquarters of the IMA and, not only that but, the hall also have the academic training hub of IMA that consists of lecture halls, computer labs and a cafe. Where at one side is this academic training hub, there opposite to this hall is standing the Khetarpal Auditorium that was inaugurated in 1982, has the capacity of 2000.

Central Library – Added to the newer wing to Chetwode Hall in 1938 was, the Central Library. This library has over 100,000 volumes and subscriptions to over 100s of periodicals from across the world. There are also multimedia sections included in the collection of multimedia. Along with the central library, there are two branch libraries that are closer to the cadet barracks across the campus.

Accommodations in IMA Campus 

Commandant’s Residence – In the campus there is one beautiful colonial structure that is landscaped with 6 acres of Garden. This is Commandant’s residence and offers panoramic view of the river silhouetted by the Himalayas. Earlier all the cadets were accommodated in GC quarters that included both Kingsley and Collins block but, with the growth of the IMA to over 5 battalions of cadets,there were some battalions that were accommodated in the South and East campus as well.

Are you aware that the IMA helipad is situated in the Tons Valley in the Northwest of the Campus.

Athletic Facilities and IMA in Dehradun

For the NDA, CDSE and TGC Qualifiers, the South IMA Campus included the Somnath Stadium and Salaria Aquatic Centre in 1970’s. With these facilities in the South Campus there are Stables with a stud farm along with the small arms shooting range.

The North IMA Campus contains Polo Ground along with the Tons River. The Tons Valley that is located on the Northwest of the campus is bounded by the bends of the Tons river and is used as the para-dropping and para-gliding. Along with that the battle training is also carried out in this area.

War Memorial, IMA in Dehradun

Inaugurated by the field Marshal Manekshaw on 17th November, 1999, The IMA War Memorial is build to pay homage to the alumni of the academy, who have fallen in the course of action. This memorial is built with pillars and columns of Dholpur Stone. There is a bronze statue of a Gentlemen Cader with the Sword presenting arms at the sanctum sanatorium of the memorial.

Passing Out Parade at IMA, Dehradun 

Passing out parade is one of the major attraction of IMA, Dehradun. All the passing out NDA, CDSE and TGC officers after training are to walk in parade that has many elements of attraction. Starting from the horses that are used by the Adjutant and moving ahead to the vintage horse-drawn coaches used by erstwhile maharajahs, parade has a royal pinch in it. There are many beautiful and remarkable order of parades that could be observed during this passing out parade in IMA Dehradun.
