Himachal Pradesh Gets 2 New Medical Colleges – One in Chamba & Other in Mandi

The Virbhadra Singh-led Government in Himachal Pradesh has announced the commencing of admissions in the two newly-opened medical colleges in the state from the coming academic session, bringing cheer to the MBBS aspirants.

While announcing the decision for admissions in these newly-opened medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh, Singh thanked the Union Government for granting permission to the new medical colleges. Students will be able to take admissions in these colleges, one each at Chamba and Mandi towns of Himachal Pradesh respectively, from this ensuing session.

Which are the new colleges in Himachal?

The medical college in Chamba would be named after India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and would known as Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, whereas the other one at Mandi would be named as Lal Bahadur Shashtri Medical College. Both these colleges of Himachal Pradesh would be able to accommodate 100 MBBS students, each, as per an official statement.

Permission Renewed

Besides these two medical colleges, the aspirants have more than reason to rejoice as the central government has renewed the permission for admission of the second batch of 100 MBBS seats in the Dr Y.S. Parmar Government Medical College at Nahan town for the current session.
While expressing his gratitude, Singh maintained that the move would go a long way in adding another major milestone in spreading and strengthening the medical education across the hill state.

Seats in Medical Colleges in Himachal Pradesh till now

Till now, the state had only two government medical colleges — one at Shimla and another at Tanda in Kangra district with a total admission capacity of up to 200 MBBS students. These functional colleges, as well as the newly-opened colleges in Himachal Pradesh, will offer better opportunities to the MBBS students in the state by providing them ample opportunities in making a bright career in the field.

More to come

Singh had stated that the Congress-led UPA government had agreed to allot three medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh. Though the grant of permission has been received for one college each at Chamba and Nahan towns, approval for the grant of medical institute at Hamirpur is still awaited, that would open more avenues for the medical aspirants.
