Sukhna Lake Chandigarh to be declared as Wetland & Here’s What This Means

The City Beautiful’s most visited place- Sukhna Lake (Chandigarh) is going to be soon declared as a Wetland. UT Administration is all set to announce Sukhna Lake as a Wetland under the Conservation & Management rule 2017. Although the approval for the same has been withheld by the Chandigarh Wetland Authority, soon the authority will come out with the decision.

A proposal for the Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake to be declared as Wetland has been submitted to the authority. And it has been expected that the final decision will be taken in the very first meeting of the Chandigarh Wetland Authority. We guess it’s a great step to conserve the degradation of beautiful Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh.

What Wetland means & Why Sukhna Lake (Chandigarh) is to be Converted

UT Administration has formed a Wetland Committee in the city which comprises of 15 members under the chairmanship of UT Administrator. Even if Sukhna Lake (Chandigarh) becomes a Wetland then many activities within the area will be banned. The proposal has been rolled out to conserve the Water reservoir of the city beautiful Chandigarh from being degraded.

As Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh has been losing its beauty due to the encroachment & pollution. Also, the discharge of the nearby sewage is also destroying the beauty of the Sukhna Lake. After falling into the Wetland of the city, the violators of the same will have to face some strict action against them from the UT Administration.

What will change @ Sukhna Lake 

As it has been decided that after the announcement of Sukhna Lake (Chandigarh) as a Wetland various activities will be banned under the same & they are as follows-

Any kind of encroachment

Manufacture industry has to follow many rules & regulations if falling under the Wetland region in Chandigarh.

No dumping of solid waste within 50-meters of the area.

No storage & import of Chemical should be carried out.

Many more rules & regulations will be issued if Sukhna Lake falls under the Wetland & the violators will have to pay a huge amount of fine for the same in the city beautiful Chandigarh.
