CTU Plans to Hike Fare for AC and Non-AC Local Buses in Chandigarh

If you travel by local bus in Chandigarh, then be ready to pay more fares. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking is all set to increase its fare and this is happening after a long gap. As of now, normal ticket cost starts from Rs. 5 for Non-AC bus and Rs. 10 for AC bus.

Going forward, CTU has prepared a proposal for the increasing the ticket rates for the passengers in Chandigarh. The hiked rates will be 10-15% of the current rates of CTU buses in the city. In 2014, CTU has revised its fare after a gap of 10 years, from then till now the same fare has been followed by CTU in the city. And after 3 years of gap CTU is once again hiking its travelling charges targeting the pocket of the passengers.

Current Rates & New Ones

As of now, the fares for a Non-AC bus in Chandigarh are:

  • Rs 5 for distance up to 3 km.
  • Rs 10 for 3 km to 10 km.
  • Rs 15 above 10 km of distance.

For red-cloured AC buses, the fares in Chandigarh are:

  • Rs 10 for upto 3 km.
  • Rs 15 for 3 to 10 km.
  • Rs 20 for over 10 km.

The new rates of CTU will be hiked up to 10-15 % as per the proposal in all the 3 different slabs for both AC and Non-AC buses. But it has been said that the department has prepared such a proposal that it will have the minimum effect on the travellers. Even the CTU will keep the rates of student passes at the minimum cost.

As per the official, these increase rates will be helpful for CTU to get over the loss it has been facing due to the continuous increase in the rates of diesel in the city. CTU incurs Rs. 50 crore loss every year in Chandigarh.

CTU Buses in Chandigarh

CTU have been currently running a total of 500 buses, out of which 410 are operating inter city connecting Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. On the daily basis, these buses ferry 2 lakh commuters. And the rest are commuting in the long routes. As per the demand, CTU will buy 200 more buses for the long route purpose to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal. It is expected that these will start operating within a couple of months.

Till now, the proposal for the same has just been made and the same will be put before the administration for the approval.
