Chandigarh administration is doing all that it can do in order to control the traffic and parking problem in the city. The latest step comes in the form of a suggestion from our mayor Harphool Kalyan, that sector 34 should have a multi level parking. Another multi level parking is already under construction in Sector 17, Chandigarh which is expected to be operational in the year 2015.
From the past 3-4 years, Chandigarh has seen a major increase in the number of vehicles which has lead to parking problems in almost all markets. Sector 34 is a major office hub. Apart from offices, there are numerous students coaching centres which attract a large number of students throughout the day. No doubt that the present parking spaces in sector 34 are well managed by the contractors but still sector 34 needs more parking areas. The ground opposite sector 34 gurudwara is also used for parking.
This proposal of a multi level parking in sector 34 was discussed in the UT secretariat. Approval of this project depends on the funds available as well as feasibility of the project. Nothing can be said of now but we are sure that some thing might come up in the near future.
Sector 17 multilevel parking project which is under construction will cost the Chandigarh municipal corporation a whooping amount of 38 crore. The capacity of this multi level parking lot will be 950 vehicles. Sector 34 is also as crowded as Sector 17 in terms of vehicle parking. So definitely, a multi level parking in sector 34 will come as a big relief to people who are currently facing parking problems.
After sector 17 and 34, Chandigarh administration should think something about the parking problems in sector 22 and sector 19. These 2 sectors are the most popular sectors in terms of general shopping and you don’t get any space to park your vehicle in the evening. The situation is even more worse on Saturday and Sunday.
Let us see if this multi level parking suggestion in sector 34 gets on the way to development or just remains on a paper buried deep under official files.
